Information for visitors travelling to Leadhills by car

Visiting Us

We are open from the 1st Saturday in May to the end of September on Saturdays and Sundays from 2pm to 5pm.

Visits can be arranged by appointment throughout the year. Enquiries should be made using our Contact form.
We will try to accomodate your requirements as closely as possible.

How to find us

Coming from the M74 (North bound), leave the motorway at Junction 14, Crawford. At the roundabout, turn left onto the A702, towards Elvanfoot. Take the next road on the right, after crossing the rail bridge, approximately half a mile; the B7040 to Leadhills. Follow the B7040 to its end at Leadhills, approximately four miles. You will arrive in Leadhills at a crossroads, turn left along Main street, the B797. The Library is immediately after the School, approximately 200 yards.

Coming from the M74 (South bound), leave the motorway at junction 14, Crawford. at the roundabout, take the right exit onto the A702 Crawford bypass. Follow this for approximately one mile, until you find and take the first road on the right (Not the council depot). The road will pass under the motorway and bares hard left to a roundabout. At the roundabout, take the second exit towards Elvanfoot (do not turn left as you will end up back on the motorway!) Take the next road on the right, after crossing the rail bridge, approximately half a mile; the B7040 to Leadhills. Follow the B7040 to its end at Leadhills, approximately four miles. You will arrive in Leadhills at a crossroads, turn left along Main street, the B797. The Library is immediately after the School, approximately 200 yards.

We can also be reached from the M74 by leaving at Junction 13, Abington. Follow the A702 through Abington, exiting the village by a sharp left bend. Just after the bend, at the brow of the hill, turn right onto the B797, Leadhills road. This will take you across the motorway. Follow the B797 for approximately six miles, where you will arrive in Leadhills. The Library can be found on the left side of the road, just after the School.

Coming from the A76, Dumfries to Kilmarnock road. Eastbound, take thew first left off the A76, after Mennock, onto the B797. Westbound, after passing through Carronbridge, following the A76 for approximately six miles, you will come to a new section of three lane carriageway where you will approach Mennock. As this section ends, near the brow of a modest hill, the Leadhills turning in on the right, the B797. This is just before you reach Mennock.

Having found the B797, follow this road where it bears hard left, over the railway then up through the Mennock pass, then remain with this road until you enter Leadhills on Main Street, approximately eight miles (You will pass by Wanlockhead after approximately seven miles). The Library is approximately half a mile into the village, on the right hand side, just before the School.

There is parking to the left of the Library, at the Village playing fields or on Main Street itself.
